4. Action

Metoclopramide takes anti-vomit action, smooth down hiccup and, moreover, gives regulatory effect of the functions of gastro-intestinal tract.

5. Posology and Administration

The drug should be taken orally, intramuscularly and intravenously. In adults: orally 5–10 mg each 3 times daily before meal; intramuscularly or intravenously — 10 mg; maximal single-shot dose is 20 mg, maximal daily dose is 60 mg (for all the administration ways). In children over 6 years of age 2,5–5 mg each 1–3 times a day, in children of less than 6 years of age 0,5–0,1 mg/kg/daily; maximal single-shot dose is 0,1 mg/kg. In compromised liver and/or kidneys function patients the starting dose should be halved, the next dose depends on the individual reaction of the patient.
The time duration of the therapy should not exceed 12 weeks.
Bleeding from intestinal tract organs, mechanical blocking and other states in which the enhancement of physical activity of alimentary tract is adverse; phermochromicytoma, allergic reactions on Metoclopramide, vomit in lacteal gland cancer patients, the first trimester of pregnancy, in lactation period, children under 3 years of age.

6. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

Caution should be taken in administration of the drug to elderly people, likewise to compromised kidneys function patients. This cohort of patients have increased risk of the emergence of side effects, in particular, movement disorder. The use of Metoclopramide in children of under 14 years of age is possible on strict indications only. In case of emergence of side effects the drug should be withdrawn immediately. In the period of treatment alcoholic consume should be avoided.

7. Interface with Other Medications

The treatment should take course strictly on doctor’s order, as far as a medication interface not always is safe, and it is not recommended to use other medications during Metoclopramide therapy.

8. Overdosing

Spasm of face muscles, speech disorders, unnatural position of the head and the shoulders, convulsions.

9. Side Effects

Metoclopramide is usually well tolerated. In rare cases extrapyramidal disorders are possible (dystaxia with reduction of its volume and tremor), definitive for parkinsonism. While administration of the drug drowsiness, buzzing in ears, dry mouth are possible.  In order to reduce these phenomena the drug may be administered sometimes after meal.

10. Pregnancy and Lactation

The use of Metoclopramide in the II-nd and the III-d trimesters of pregnancy is possible on strict indications and under a doctor’s order.

If the drug is used in the form of injections, ability for car driving and fulfilling of the work which demands a special alertness may be disturbed.
