- Indications for Use.
Treatment of acute attacks of schizophrenia, supporting therapy of schizophrenia.
Treatment of acute manic episodes of bipolar disorders of the I-st type and for supporting therapy in patients of bipolar disorder of the I-st type, recently having had a manic episode or a mixed one.
- Action
Due to a favorable security profile and tolerance Aripiprazole is an optimal therapy method in patients with the first episode of schizophrenia.
- Posology and Administration
Recommended doses of Aripiprazole both a starting dose and a supporting one is15 mg/daily.
Elderly patients. In the treatment of patients of more than 65 years of age dosage rates should be lower. The patients belonging to this age group, in the whole are more exposed to the emergence of side effects, that is why a starting dose of 10 mg/daily is good, thus, the patients who have not had anti-psychotic drugs therapy may be administered Aripiprazole in a dose of 10 mg/daily.
Patients of young age. It is not yet studied the action of Aripiprazole on schizophrenic patients younger than 18 years old. Thus, caution is needed in the case of necessity to administer Aripiprazole to young patients. Starting doses should be less than 15 mg/daily. In case of a good tolerance of this dose during the first 7 days, it may be increased.
- Counterindications
Hypersensibility to Aripiprazole or any other component, making a part of the drug, age under 18 years.
- Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
The drug is administered with caution to: the patients with cardio-vascular diseases (ischemic heart disease or had myocardial infarction, heart failure and asequence); hypotension or predilection to it. Patients with convulsive attacks or suffering from diseases in which convulsion are possible; patients with excessive sweat, for instance in intensive physical activity, overheating, acceptance of anticholinergic drugs, in water depletion (due to the ability of neuroleptics to damage thermal regulation);
patients with elevated risk of aspiration pneumonia (due to the risk of the damage of motor function of esophagus and aspiration); patients suffering from obesity and patients who have diabetes in the family.
- Interface with Other Medications
It is strongly not recommended to combine the acceptance of some other medications during Abilify therapy without doctor’s order.
- Overdosing
Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, asthenia, diarrhea and drowsiness.
- Side Effects
Cardio-vascular system: fainting fits, dilatation of the heart, atrial flutter, thrombophlebitis, intracranial hemorrhage, ischemia of the brain, heartbeats, myocardial infarction, heart arrest, blood-strokes, fibrillation of atriums, insufficience of the heart, myocardial ischemia, deep venous thrombosis, phlebitis, steep decline of arterial tension, tachycardia.
Gastro-intestinal system: elevation of appetite, deglutitive problem, meteorism, gastritis, caries, gingivitis, hemorrhoid, gastro-intestinal hemorrhages, tongue edema, fecal incontinence, colitis, rectal bleedings, stomatitis, ulceration in the mouth, cholecystitis, candidiasis of mucus coating of the mouth, biliously-stone disease, belching, gastric ulcer; dyspepsia, vomiting, constipation; nausea, loss of appetite.
Immune system: allergic reactions (angioneurotic edema, itching and hives).
Nervous system: delirium, euphoria, weakness of memory, stupor, amnesia, insult to the brain, hyperactivity, disorder of selfconsciousness, muscle jerking, weakening of attention concentration, “restless legs” syndrome, broken spirit, reinforced reflexes, retardation of ideational function, hyposensitivity to excitors, hypotony, disorder of oculomotor response; dizziness, tremor, extrapyramidal syndrome, phychomotor excitement, depression, nervousness, high salivation, hostility, suicidal thoughts, manic thoughts, rickety walk, mental fog, reluctance to fulfill passive motions; insomnia, drowsiness, low/high libido, impotency.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
Abilify may be taken during pregnancy only if a potential use of the acceptance exceeds a potential risk for the fetus. Breastfeeding during the drug intake is not recommended.
- Driving
Like in the administration of other neuroleptics, also in the administration of Aripiprazole a patient should be warned about the danger of work with moving mechanisms and vehicle driving.
