3. Indications for Use.

Avandia is a hypoglycemic preparation indicated for the treatment of sugar diabetes of type 2 (insulin-independent sugar diabetes). Avandia may be used in the capacity of a single agent therapy in patients for whom a diet or exercise regulation treatment may be inefficient, likewise in combination with a series of other medications (on doctor’s order).

Avandia deflates the content of glucose in blood, increasing sensitivity of fat tissue, skeletal muscle and liver tissues to insulin.

5. Posology and Administration

Avandia should be taken orally, regardless of meal, once or twice a day. A dose or a scheme of treatment should be picked individually. The starting dose is 4 mg daily; after 6–8 weeks if the dose is not enough efficient it may be increased up to 8 mg daily. There is no need to correct a dose for elderly patients.
If Avandia is used in combination with insulin its starting dose will be 4 mg a day. If more intensive glycemic control is needed a dose may be increased up to 8 mg a day after clinical examination of the patient (for the purpose of evaluation of a potential risk of progression of the side effects due to liquid retention in the body).

- hypersensitivity to Avandia components;
- insulin-dependent sugar diabetes (type I sugar diabetes); in the absence of insulin Avandia is not efficient;
- severe compromised liver function;
- pregnancy, breastfeeding period;
- childhood and adolescence under 18 years of age (efficiency and safety of the drug are not determined);

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

Avandia should be used with caution in severe heart failure and severe kidney failure.

9. Overdosing

Symptoms. The data on Avandia overdosing are limited. In volunteers clinical studies a good tolerance of Avandia in a single-shot dose up to 20 mg is noticed.

10. Side Effects

Seldom – headache, upper respiratory tracts infections, peripheral edemas, anemia, insignificant increase of the body mass. In rare cases – progression of backward heart failure, fluid lungs, signs of compromised liver functions (rise of hepatic ferments).

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

The use of the drug is not presented (the data on the use of Avandia during pregnancy and breastfeeding are not sufficient). If there is a need of the use of Avandia breastfeeding should be stopped.
