- Indications for Use.
- edema syndrome of various genesis (in chronic heart failure of the II-nd and the III-d stages, hepatic liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension syndrome, nephrotic syndrome);
- kidney failure;
- acute left ventricular failure (pseudoasthma, pulmonary edema);
- brain edema;
- arterial hypertension, including some forms of hypertension crisis;
- forced diuresis.
- Action
Performance of Furosemide provokes enhanced excretion of water from body. The drug is efficient in redistribution within renal blood flow. It takes hypotensive action and decreases reactions of smooth muscles of vessels.
- Posology and Administration
A dosage regimen is set up individually in compliance with severity of the patient’s condition.
In a light edema syndrome the starting dose for adults usually will be 20-80 mg of oral administration and 20-40 mg of intramuscular or intravenous applications.
In persistent edemas the starting dose is the same or bigger by 20-40 mg.
For children the starting dose is 2 mg/kg of the body mass.
When there is arterial hypertension the starting dose is 80 mg/daily (usually divided into two intakes).
When there is pulmonary edema Furosemide is introduced intravenously in a dose of 40 mg. Once thereof requires the patient’s condition, then after 20 minutes there should be made another injection from 20 to 40 mg of Furosemide.
- Counterindications
Hypersensitivity, acute kidney failure with anuria, severe kidney failure, liver coma, stenosis of urethra, elevation of central venous tension, low arterial tension, acute myocardial infarction, pancreatitis, diabetes, pregnancy (especially the first half, possible life-saving use), lactation period.
- Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
Diabetes patients or those with low glucose tolerance will need monitoring of a glucose concentration in blood and urine. Coma patients suffering from hypertrophy of prostate gland will need urination monitoring as there is a possibility of acute urine retention.
- Interface with Other Medications
The use of the drug and/or its combination with some other medication is possible only on a doctor’s order. Consult your doctor if you take other medicines.
- Overdosing
Significant drop of arterial tension.
- Side Effects
On the part of cardio-vascular system: arterial hypotension, disorders of heart rate.
On the part of intestinal tract: dry mouth, less frequent – nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, in specific cases - pancreatitis.
On the part of the skin: dermatitis.
On the part of sense organs: in specific cases – when high doses of Furosemide are applied and excretion function of kidneys are in an evidenced disorder there may be disorders of hearing, vision and paresthesia.
Others: dizziness, muscle weakness, convulsions, in specific cases – allergic shock.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
In the period of pregnancy Furosemide may be used only on strict indications and for a short time. As the drug may pass into breast milk (likewise it may suppress lactation), then if needed its administration during lactation breastfeeding should be stopped.
