- Indications for Use.
The drug is to be administered orally to patients of pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs), bronchitis (inflammation of bronchial tubes), purulent pleurisy (inflammation of the lung coat), subacute septic (associated with presence of microbes in blood) endocarditis (inflammation of intracavities of the heart), bacterial dysentery and amebic one, whooping cough, angina, scarlatina, gonorrhea, brucellosis (infectious disease transferred to a human being, as a rule, from farm animals), tularemia (acute infectious disease transferred to a human being from animals), flea-borne typhus and relapsing fever, parrot disease (acute infectious disease, transferred to a human being from birds), in infectious diseases of urinary tracts, chronic cholecystitis (inflammation of gall bladder), purulent meningitis (purulent inflammation of brain lining) and in other infectious diseases provoked by the microorganisms sensible to this antibiotic. Ampicillin may be also used for prevention of infectious aggravations in surgery patients. Ampicillin may be administered locally in infectious diseases of the eyes, burns, phlegmons (acute, not well limited purulent inflammation), and mastitis (inflammation of milk-excreting mammary ducts).

Ampicillin is used orally and outwardly. Ampicillin usually is well tolerated.
- Posology and Administration
The drug is to be taken orally, it should be rinsed with enough quantity of liquid, in adults 0.25-0.5 g 4 times daily or 0.5-1 g every 12 hours are administered. Maximal daily dose is 4 g. In acne eruption: 0.5-2 g/daily in divided doses. In case of improvement of the conditions (usually in 3 weeks) the dose will usually be decreased to a supporting one - 0.125-1 g. Adequate remission of acne eruption may be reached when the drug is used every other day or alternate day therapy. In brucellosis — 0.5 g every 6 hours during 3 weeks, together with intramuscular introduction of streptomycin in a dose of 1 g 12 hours during 1 week and once daily during 2 weeks. Uncomplicated gonorrhea: starting single dose is 1.5 g, then 0.5 g every 6 hours during 4 days (total dose is 9 g). In syphilis a dose should be 0.5 g every 6 hours during 15 days (incipient syphilis) or 30 days (tardive syphilis). In uncomplicated urethral, endocervical and rectal infections provoked by Chlamydia trachomatis a dosage regimen should be 0.5 g 4 times daily during not less than 7 days. In children over 8 years of age a dose should be 6.25-12.5 mg/kg every 6 hours or 12.5-25 mg/g every 12 hours.
- Counterindications
Ampicillin is counterindicated in hypersensitivity to it and that of to its relative antibiotics (Oxitetracycline, Doxycycline etc.), also it is not recommended in fungus diseases.
Ampicillin should not be administered (likewise other drugs of this group) to pregnant women and children of less than 8 years of age.

The drug should be used with caution in kidney disease, leucopenia (decrease of leucocytes level in the blood). The drug should be administered with caution to the patients with reference to allergic reactions in anamnesis (hospital history sheet).
- Interface with Other Medications

- Overdosing
In overdosing Ampicillin enhancement of side effects are most likely.
- Side Effects
Side effects: decrease of appetite, nausea, vomiting, functional disturbance of intestinal tract (light or severe flux), changes of mucus coatings of the mouth and intestinal tract (inflammation of the tongue, stomatitis /inflammation of mucus coating of the mouth cavity/gastritis /inflammation of the stomach/inflammation of straight intestine), allergic reactions, Quincke’s edema (allergic edema) etc may appear.
Ampicillin may enhance sensitivity of the skin to the sun rays action.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
Ampicillin should not be administered in the period of pregnancy. During the treatment breastfeeding should be cancelled.
