- Indications for Use.
Amiodarone has a widespread application in cardiology. It is administered when there is stenocardia, especially in the patients who suffer from attacks which emerge after physical stresses or psychic ones, while there are various disorders of the heart rhythm which is accompanied with acceleration of heart beats. Sometimes it is administered in acute period of myocardial infarction.

- Posology and Administration
The drug is administered orally in the form of tablets with food or after meal. Amiodarone is recommended to take discontinuously: 5 days with an interval of 2 days. The drug’s dose and the length of the treatment course should be determined by the attending doctor. There may be other dosage schemes of the drug application. When there are arrhythmias Amiodarone is administered intravenously in order to stop the attack.
- Counterindications
Sinus bradycardia (in the absence of correction by pacemaker), sick sinus syndrome (in the absence of correction by pacemaker), sinoatrial block, AV- block and bundle branch block (in the absence of cardiac pacemaker), evidenced arterial hypotension, circulatory collapse, hyperthyroidism, hypersensitivity to Amiodarone or iodine, II–III-d trimester of pregnancy and the period of breastfeeding, age less than 3 years.
- Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
The drug should be used with caution in cases of chronic heart failure, bronchial asthma, pregnancy, lactation period, elderly age (high risk of development of bad bradycardia), age under 18 (there have nor been determined efficiency and safety of the use).
Caution should be taken while Amiodarone therapy in thyroid function abnormality patients.
- Interface with Other Medications
Combination with other medications may result in unpredictable side effects. For that matter it is recommended to inform your doctor which medication you take or have taken in the last period of time. - Overdosing
Symptoms: sinus bradycardia, heart arrest, attack of ventricular tachycardia, paroxysmal tachycardia “torsade de pointes”, disturbed circulation and compromised liver function, drop of arterial tension in a great measure.
- Side Effects
Usually Amiodarone is tolerated well, but sometimes while oral administration there may be nausea, sense of discomfort in gastric zone, stool disorders (constipation or diarrhea). After big doses have taken (usually in the beginning of treatment) some patients may have bradycardia (slow pulse, less than 60 beats a minute).
When there is a long-term administration of Amiodarone there may be manifestations of other adverse effects: sensitivity of the skin to the sun rays enhanced, therefore it is recommended to avoid staying in the sunlight. If the drug is administered 20 months and more on the skin of the face and hands there may emerge grey pigmentation which is preserved during 1 — 4 years; pigment is deposited in eye cornea, there may emerge small vision troubles, itching in the eyes. These events will pass after six months or a year after Amiodarone withdrawal.

Amiodarone therapy is counterindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
