3. Indications for Use.
Acyclovir is used for the treatment of the infections provoked by herpes virus. Herpes virus may provoke the following diseases: genital herpes, herpes fever, herpes zoster and chicken pox.
Acyclovir may be used for other purposes, not listed in this instruction.

4. Action
Acyclovir is an antivirus drug. It slows down the development and propagation of herpes virus, helping the body to get through the infection. Acyclovir facilitates the symptoms of the infection and reduces the length of the disease.

5. Posology and Administration
The course of treatment should be started as earlier as possible after the first manifestations of the symptoms (for instance, tingling, burning and appearance of blisters).
Do not cancel intake of Acyclovir even after coming mend, fulfill all the instructions of the doctor. The mend may come up to the complete cure.
Each dose should be rinsed with a full glass of water.
For prevention of returns of Herpes simplex patients with immunodeficiency are administered 200 mg 4 times in 24 hours every 6 hours. In case of a frank immunodeficiency (after transplantation of bone marrow or at intestinal malabsorbtion) - 400 mg 5 times in 24 hours. Children above 6 years of age 800 mg 4 times in 24 hours; 2-6 years 400 mg 4 times in 24 hours; under 2 years of age 200 mg 4 times in 24 hours. The dose may be more precisely determined on the basis of 20 mg/kg, but not more than 800 mg 4 times in 24 hours. The course of treatment is 5 days. For children from 3 months to 12 years a dose for intravenous injection is based on body surface: infections provoked by virus Herpes simplex, - 250 mg/sq.m of body surface every 8 hours; impaired immunity, herpes encephalitis, chicken pox, herpes zoster - 500 mg/sq.m of intake.
Genital herpes: initial therapy 200 mg every 4 hours in awakening period, 5 times a day during 10 days; recurrent genital herpes (less than 6 episodes a year), intermittent therapy - 200 mg every 4 hours in awakening period, 5 times a day during 5 days; recurrent genital herpes (more than 6 episodes a year), long-termed suppressing therapy - 400 mg 2 times a day or 200 mg 3-5 times in 24 hours.
Herpes fever of skin and mucous covers (treatment): 200-400 mg 5 times in 24 hours during 10 days in patients with distortion of immunity. Herpes fever of skin and mucous covers (prevention): 400 mg every 12 hours.
Herpes zoster: 800 mg every 4 hours in awakening period, 5 times a day during 7-10 days.
Chicken pox: 800 mg 4 times a day during 5 days. The treatment should be started at manifestation of the earliest signs or symptoms of chicken pox...
Children 2-12 years of age with the body mass up to 40 kg at chicken pox: intake 20 mg/kg, up to 800 mg per dose, 4 times a day during 5 days. Children of 2-12 of age of the body mass of 40 kg and more at chicken pox: a dose for adults. Intravenous by drop infusion (it is let in with constant velocity at least during 1 hour).

Long-time or repeated treatment of Acyclovir in patients at impaired immunity may result in the emergence of the virus strains non-sensitive to its action. Acyclovir does not prevent the sexual transmission of the virus that is why in the period of treatment it is recommended to keep from sexual contacts, even if there are no clinical manifestations.

6. Counterindications
Acyclovir has the following counterindications: hypersensitivity (including to Valacyclovir), lactation.
Caution should be needed in patients with dewatering, kidney failure, neurologic distortions, in the period of the development of reactions on cytotoxic drugs (in intravenous injections) also if they are in anamnesis, at pregnancy.

Do not take Acyclovir without telling your doctor if you have an allergic reaction on Valacyclovir (Valtrex).

8. Interface with Other Medications
Other medicines may also interact with Acyclovir. Consult your doctor if you take prescribed drugs, or non-prescribed medicines, including herbs.

9. Overdosing
Oral intake of 20 g of Acyclovir did not provoke any specific symptoms.
Symptoms of overdosage of Acyclovir are: convulsions, hallucinations and functional failure of kidneys (lapse of urine output)

fever, hallucinations, hydrops, impairment of vision, headache.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation
There have not been done any adequate studies and strict clinical control investigations of the safety of using of Acyclovir in a period of pregnancy. The use is justified only in those cases when a supposed advantage for mother exceeds a potential risk for fetus. If the doses to be taken by mouth are high, the patient should drink much liquid. If there is a drastic need to administer the drug during lactation breastfeeding should be ceased.
