3. Indications for Use.
Painful spasms of muscles in spinal diseases,
after surgery of discal hernia or osteoarthritis of a hip,
spasticity and pains conditioned by neurologic diseases:
insular sclerosis,
chronic myelopathy,
degenerative diseases of spine,
stroke,
insult,
traumatic brain injuries,
cerebral palsy,
median convulsions.
4. Action
Relaxes skeleton muscles during chronic spastic states of spinal or cerebral origin, resolve acute painful muscle spasms and clonic convulsions. Decreases impedance of muscles with passive movements, increases the strength of arbitrary muscle contractions.
5. Posology and Administration
Optimal day’s dose is 12-14 mg (in 3-4 intakes), but not more than 36 mg. The dose is increasing gradually beginning with 2 mg 3 times a day. Gradual increase of a dose by 2 mg in every 3-7 days.
6. Counterindications
Hypersensitivity, frank failure of functions of liver and kidneys, pregnancy, breast feeding (ceased during treatment), childhood
7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
A monitoring of function of liver and kidneys is needed; the doses should be reduced when the functions become worse.
8. Interface with Other Medications
Administration of Zanaflex together with the drugs which action is aimed on reducing of arterial tension, including urinatives, may sometimes provoke an excessive decrease of arterial tension and bradycardia.
Alcohol or sedatives may enhance the sedative action of Zanaflex.
9. Overdosing
To the present time there have been received several notices about overdosing of Tizanidine, including the case when a taken dose was 400 mg. In all the cases people recovered without exception.
Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, arterial hypotension, sleepiness, myosis, anxiety, respiration disturbance, coma.
Treatment. For excretion of the drug out of body multiply administration of activated coal is recommended. If overdosing is suspected immediately call a doctor.
10. Side Effects
While taking small doses recommended for stopping of muscle spasm, side effects emerge seldom, usually they are not frank and transitive. Often: sleepiness, weakness, dizziness, small decrease of arterial tension, dry mouth.
Seldom: nausea, gastroenteric upsets, transitive increase of activity of liver transaminases.
In administration of the higher doses recommended to cure spasticity, the above mentioned side effects emerge more often and are more frank, but they are rarely so severe to make the treatment ceased. Moreover, the following phenomenon may emerge:
Often: arterial hypotension, bradycardia.
Seldom: muscle weakness, insomnia, sleeping upsets, hallucinations.
Very seldom: acute hepatitis.
11. Pregnancy and Lactation
Counterindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
12. Driving
Because of a possible sleepiness and weakness it is recommended the persons whose work requires quick physical and psychical reaction (operators of industrial machines, drivers etc) to limit the use of the drug.
