Capsules and solvable tablets of Fluoxetine are used orally, beginning from 20 mg once daily, regardless of meal. If needed the drug dose may be increased up to 40-60 mg daily, divided into 2 intakes (in the morning and in the afternoon) or 3 intakes during a day. The maximal daily dose for adults is 80 mg.
Therapeutic performance of the drug is evident 2-4 weeks after the beginning of the treatment, in some patients it may be attained later.
In depressions of various types a starting dose of the drug is 20 mg once/daily in the first half of the day (in the morning), regardless of meal. In the lack or inefficiency of the expected effect in several weeks it is possible to increase a day’s dose but not more than up to 80 mg in 2-3 intakes.
In bulimia nervosa Fluoxetine is used in a daily dose of 60 mg divided into 2-3 intakes.
In elderly patients a recommended daily dose is 20 mg.
In patients with disorders of liver or kidney function, likewise in the presence of some coexisting illnesses and in simultaneous administration of certain medications, entering into a medicinal interaction with Fluoxetine, it is recommended to decrease a dose of the drug or increase an interval between its intakes.

6. Counterindications

Fluoxetine is counterindicated in hypersensitivity to the drug.
The drug should not be used in childhood; the drug is counterindicated in pregnancy and in nursing mothers (for a period of treatment breastfeeding should be ceased).

During Fluoxetine therapy it is prohibited to drink alcoholic beverages.
With caution and under a strict doctor’s control the drug is administered in the diseases of epilepsy, in the probability of convulsions, in suicidal tunes, diabetes, likewise in frank disorders of liver and kidney function, in inflammation of urinary bladder, adenoma of prostate gland, closed-angle form of glaucoma (in doubtful cases it is better to give up on a therapy). The treatment should be started from half-doses.

9. Overdosing

Overdosage of Fluoxetine is manifested in the form of hypomania, in emergence of an intensive excitement (accompanied with a sense of physic tension and fear) and motor anxiety, frank nausea and vomiting, convulsion attacks, disorders of heart rate, tachycardia.

10. Side Effects

In the beginning of the therapy and in increase of a dose rate alarm and irritability, sleep disorders, drowsiness, headache, nausea; less frequently – vomiting and diarrhea may emerge. It may be lack of appetite and decrease of the body mass. Seldom – it may be emergence of convulsion attacks. Allergic reactions in the form of skin rash, itching, chill, high temperature, pain in muscles and in joints.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

It is not recommended to administer Fluoxetine in the periods of pregnancy, lactation, likewise to children. In its use during pregnancy there are noticed an elevation risk of premature birth, abnormal development and low adaptation of infants.

12. Driving
