Divalproex Sodium is used in adults and in children in various types of epilepsy: in various forms of generalized attacks – small attacks and bigger ones (convulsive) and и polymorphal; in focal attacks (motor attacks and psychomotor ones, etc). The drug shows the most efficiency in absences and in temporal pseudoabsences.

Divalproex Sodium is an anticonvulsive remedy for the treatment of various forms of epilepsy and convulsive syndrome on the background of organic brain diseases.

5. Posology and Administration

Divalproex Sodium acid should be taken orally during or just after meal. It is started from smaller doses, gradually increasing them within 1—2 weeks up to the gain of a therapeutic effect; then an individual supporting dose should be selected.
A daily dose for adults is 0,3—0,6 g (1—2 tablets) in the beginning of treatment, then it should be gradually increased up to 0,9—1,5 g. A single-shot dose is 0,3—0,45 g.
The highest daily dose is 2,4 g.
A dose for children should be selected individually in compliance with the age, severity of illness, therapeutic performance. Usually a daily dose for children is 20—50 mg per 1 kilo of the body mass, the highest daily dose is 60 mg/kg. The treatment is started from 15 mg/kg, then the dose should be increased on a weekly basis by 5—10 mg/kg up to the gain of the needed effect. A daily dose should be divided into 2—3 intakes. In children it is convenient to administer the drug in the form of a liquid medication – a syrup. A needed quantity of syrup is to be measured with a dosing spoon with graduations of 2 5 and 5 ml.

6. Counterindications

The drug is counteindicated in compromised liver function in that of duodenal gland, bleeding diathesis.

With care it should be used in patients with blood dyscrasia, in brain organic disease, liver diseases in anamnesis, pathologic low content of total protein in blood, compromised kidney functions.

8. Interface with Other Medications

Divalproex Sodium is not recommended to take together with other medications without a doctor’s order. Otherwise it may provoke a series of adverse side effects.

9. Overdosing

Symptoms: comatose state, muscle hypotonia, breathing dysfunction.

10. Side Effects

Eventual side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pains in stomach, anorexia or rise of appetite, drowsiness, allergic skin reactions.
In long-time administration of big doses of Divalproex Sodium temporary hair loss is possible.
Rare but the most severe side effects for Divalproex Sodium are compromised liver and duodenal gland function and impairment of blood coagulability.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

The drug should not be administered in the first 3 months of pregnancy (in later terms it is administered in lesser doses, only if other anti-epileptic remedies are not efficient). It also must be taken into account that the drug excretes into breastfeeding women’s milk.

12. Driving

Divalproex Sodium acid reduces the ability of patients of rapid reaction! Patients should be warned on an eventual emergence of drowsiness. The drug reduces alertness in vehicle drivers. Other activities that require elevated concentration of attention, rapidness of psychomotor actions.
