3. Indications for Use.
Gastro-esophageal reflux disease.
Gastric and duodenal ulcer.
Treatment of Aspirin, Indomethacyn, Dyclofenac etc. induced gastric ulcer.
Prevention of Aspirin, Indomethacyn, Dyclofenac induced backsets of gastric and duodenal ulcer in risk group.
4. Action
The drug decreases secretion of stomach glands.
5. Posology and Administration
The drug is to be taken by mouth. A tablet should be swallowed in whole and to be rinsed with liquid. The tablets should not be chewed or fractured.
The drug is indicated for adults and children over 12 years of age
Gastro-esophageal reflux disease
Treatment of erosive reflux-esophagitis: 40 mg once a day during 4 weeks.
A supplementary 4-weeks course in cases when after the first course there is no healing of esophagitis or the symptoms persist.
Long supportive care after healing of erosive reflux-esophagitis for prevention of a backset: 20 mg once a day.
Symptomatic treatment of gastro-esophageal disease: 20 mg once a day in patients without esophagitis. If the symptoms do not disappear after 4 weeks of treatment it is necessary to carry out a supplementary assessment of the patient. After abolition of the symptoms it is possible to pass to an “if needed” regimen of the drug intake, i.e. to take Nexium 20 mg once a day in case of rebound
6. Counterindications
Hyper-sensitivity to Esomeprazole, substituted benzimidazoles and other components of the drug. Children under 12 years of age should not use the drug.
7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
In patients with severe kidney failure (few experience of the use).
If there are any alarm signs (for instance such as substantial spontaneous loss of body weight, repeated vomiting, dysphagia, vomiting with admixture of crocks or melena), also in stomach ulcer (or suspected stomach ulcer) it is necessary to rule out malign neoformation, as Nexium treatment may result in smoothing of symptoms and to delay the definition of a diagnosis.
8. Interface with Other Medications
The drug is active in relation with other medications that is why if you take some other medicines you necessarily need to tell your doctor.
9. Overdosing
Accompanied by general weakness and intestinal symptoms.
10. Side Effects
Frequent
- headache, ache in stomach, diarrhea, meteorism, nausea/vomiting, constipation.
Less frequent
- dermatitis, itching, hives, rash. Dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, paresthesia, drowsiness, increment in activity of ‘liver” ferments, circumferential hydrops.
11. Pregnancy and Lactation
Nowadays there are not enough data of the use of Nexium during pregnancy.
The drug should be administered to pregnant women only in the case when a supposed benefit for the mother exceeds a supposed risk for the fetus.

The drug does not affect the ability to drive a vehicle or to handle mechanisms.
