3. Indications for Use.
For fast suppressing of a migraine attack.
Sumatripatran is not indicated for prevention of migraine attacks.
4. Action
The drug is usually fast in removing or suppressing headaches (with or without an aura). Also decreases nausea, vomiting, photophobia and other phenomena accompanying migraine attacks. It may be administered as prevention with frequent attacks of migraine, but it is not recommended for a long-termed prevention use. Usually it is efficient in patients not reacting on non-narcotic analgetics and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs.
5. Posology and Administration
It should be taken by mouth, a tablets swallowed in whole and rinsed with water. A recommended dose is one tablet 50 mg each. Some patients may need a larger dose - 100 mg. If the symptoms of migraine are not removed and are not decreased after the intake of the first dose, you should not take another dose of the drug in order to stop the same attack. But the drug may be used to stop further attacks of migraine.
If a patient feels improvement after the first dose, and then the symptoms are resumed, he or she may take the second dose during the next 24 hours. Maximal dose of Sumatriptan should not exceed 300 mg during 24 hour period.
6. Counterindications
- stenocardia or myocardial infarction in the past;
- compromised liver and kidneys function;
- epilepsy;
- advanced age (over 60 years old);
- hypersensitivity to the drug.
7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
Epilepsy (including any states with a threshold reduction of readiness for convulsions), arterial hypertension (controlled),
- pregnancy, breastfeeding,
- age under 18 years old (safety and efficiency have not been stated),
- age more than 65 years old (the experience of use is limited).
8. Interface with Other Medications
Do not take Sumatriptan together with other medications without first telling your doctor.
Before and after the treatment it is necessary to keep a diet, exclude the products which contain tyramine (chocolate, cacao, nuts, citrus fruits, beans, tomatoes, cheese, etc).
9. Overdosing
Oral intake of Sumatriptan in a dose more than 400 mg did not provoke any side effects, besides the ones outnumbered below.

-dizziness, weakness, sleepiness;
-arterial hypotension or short-tempered rise of arterial tension, bradycardia or tachycardia;
- nausea, vomiting;
- skin rash, erythema, itching;
- warmth feeling, tinglings, pains, pressures and squeezes in various parts of the body.
11. Pregnancy and Lactation
Clinical experience of the use of Sumatriptan in pregnant women is limited, that is why it is counterindicated for use in them.
Take cautions while using it in the period of lactation. It is not recommended to breastfeed a baby during 24 hours after intake of Sumatriptan.
12. Driving
The drug should be administered with caution to drivers of vehicles and to persons whose work requires alertness.
