3. Indications for Use.
Herpes zoster, the infections of skin and mucous coats, provoked by a virus of a herpetic fever, prevention of return of the diseases provoked with a virus of herpetic fever, prevention of cytomegalovirus infection against immunodeficiency.

Antiherpetic drug.

5. Posology and Administration
For the treatment of herpetic zoster in adults 1 g 3 times/in 24 hours during 7 days.
For the treatment of the diseases provoked by virus Herpes simplex, in adults Valtrex is administered 500 mg 2 times/24 hours. In case of returns the treatment should be made during 3 or 5 days. In more severe initial cases the treatment should be started as earlier as possible, and its length should be increased from 5 to 10 days. With returns of the disease an administration of Valtrex after the emergence of the first symptoms of the disease is considered optimal.
As an alternative for the treatment of labial herpes (lip fever) Valtrex administration in a dose of 2 g 2 times during 1 day. The second dose should be taken approximately in 12 hours (but not earlier than in 6 hours) after intake of the first dose. In such a regimen of dosage the length of the treatment should not exceed 1 day as it does not give any additional clinical advantage. The therapy should be started with emergence of the earliest symptoms of lip fever (i.e. prickling, itching, and heat).
For prevention (suppression) of returns of the infections provoked by virus Herpes simplex, in adults with normal indices of immunity, the drug is administered in a dose of 500 mg once in 24 hours. With very frequent returns (10 or more times a year) administration of Valtrex may be more efficient in a 24 hours’ dose of 500 мг, divided into 2 intakes (250 mg 2 times in 24 hours). In immunodeficient adults it is recommended to administer 500 mg 2 times in 24 hours.
The length of treatment is 4-12 months.

6. Counterindications
Hyper sensibility (including hyper sensibility to Acyclovir and other remedies close to it in terms of the content), childhood under 12 of age.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
- clinically frank forms of HIV-infection;
- pregnancy, lactation.
It is administered with caution in any states accompanied with immunodeficiency, after transplantation of bone marrow and kidneys, with disseminated herpes zoster, with initial genital herpes, with diseases of liver and kidney. Elderly patients are recommended to increase the volume of consumed liquid during treatment. Avoid sexual contacts during the treatment of genital herpes (the drug does not safeguard from transmission of infection).

8. Interface with Other Medications
Clinically significant interface of Valtrex with other medications is not stated. Nevertheless it is important to be cautious in intake of Valtrex with other medications. Ask your doctor for advice.

9. Overdosing
Nausea, vomiting, headache, confusion of consciousness.

10. Side Effects
Headache, nausea, if it is taken for a long time in high doses – thrombocytopenic purpura and/or hemolytic uremic syndrome with the signs of kidney failure and hemolytic microangiopathic anemia.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation
It is possible if a supposed performance of therapy exceeds a potential risk of fetus (not enough information about its use in pregnant women).

Valtrex does not influence the ability to drive vehicles or work with mechanisms.
